Kienna stroked Whistles, the black mother cat. Her inky fur was like glossy velvet. “You are doing such a marvellous job,” she cooed at her. Eight wriggly kittens crawled around her, their eyes open. They were now at the cute stage, and Kienna had already taken about thirty photographs of them.

There were three grey ones like Slinky, a ginger one and one tabby, which must have been Slinky’s, and three black and white ones which were Whistles’. Whistles was growing on her every day, and she knew she would be keeping her and one of the kittens – the grey one that had survived the ordeal of being trapped in Slinky’s womb. She picked up the little grey body that wrapped softly around her hand. The kitten mewed and then purred. She stroked it and peered into its blue, milky eyes. “Oh, I think I’ve fallen in love with you. Badly. And it seems like I’m falling for a man, too. How crazy is that?”

Blake was picking her up in half an hour to go to Rachelle’s. The thought of facing her as Blake’s ”friend” was unpleasant. Very unpleasant. Rachelle could accuse her of all sorts of things. Yet, what difference did it make? Rachelle had dumped him of her own accord. Part of the unease was that deep inside, she feared that Blake would still be besotted with her. Rachelle was a beautiful woman, elegant and sophisticated. Not the “girl-next-door” type like Kienna. Not impulsive and indecisive and unsure of herself in so many ways, like her. Having to hide the fact that they’d developed a romantic relationship, made the relationship vulnerable and shaky, open to being destroyed in one moment. So, why was she doing this? Why was she risking her heart again?

Hope had blossomed in her heart for the first time in years – hope that she may actually find true love in this life. That there was a man who treasured her – a man whom she wanted herself, just as much and if not more. Something inside of her couldn’t let go of that hope, not yet. Rising up, she dressed and put her make-up on, but as the time came closer for him to arrive, niggling doubts began to grow. What if that hope was dashed to the ground again? How would she handle it?

Half an hour later, Kienna’s fears had disappeared. Blake was in a cheerful mood and talkative when he picked her up. He took her for an ice cream cone at a takeaway, and they ate it in the parking lot while Kienna showed Blake the photos of the kittens on her phone.

“Now you haven’t told me how to look after a kitten yet. I know I said we should wait, but I’m curious.”

“You just have to feed it kitten food and keep a litter box for it – use the crystal litter as it keeps the odours away. They should be trained out of the litter box after a short while – maybe a few more weeks or months.
